Baby at 6 months

At the end of this month the child will be half a year old. During these 30 days he will learn many important things and acquire key habits.

Medical examinations of a baby at 6 months

Usually, parents are already used to the usual monthly checkups at the doctor. The child will again be weighed and the circumference of his chest and head will be measured.

Norm for height and weight

From here on, the rate of weight gain begins to decrease. At the end of the sixth month, the child will be about 650 g heavier. He will have grown 2-3 cm in height.

Exciting changes

You have certainly felt that the child has become heavier. The strain on the arms is already more significant than in previous months. In the usual case, by the end of the sixth month, the child weighs twice as much as after birth.

This period of development is accompanied by a study of the force of gravity. Almost every object that falls on the child is dropped to the ground. The little experimenter takes great pleasure in this process. In addition, he watches his mother, who responds each time and lifts the object from the ground.

This change is linked to the child’s development. He begins to realize that the objects in the hand are not an extension of it, but completely separate.

Speech

As the months progress, it becomes more and more interesting to communicate with the child. His speech abounds with the most unexpected word combinations of letters. You may even hear consonants like “u”, “c”, “h”, etc.

Emotional world

Along with physical development, the little one’s emotional world continues to enrich. His benevolent communication with adults is a huge influence.

A child of 6 months will not always be happy with the time you devote to talking to him. He will try to attract your attention with a variety of sounds. If the mother is willing to respond to invitations, the child will come alive.

A definite sign that the child is more than satisfied is his joyful cries.

In the sixth month, the little one begins to show more and more interest in the human face. He will try on every occasion to touch the face of mom and dad – to grab them by the nose, ear, put a finger in their mouth, touch their teeth.

The 6-month-old child clearly distinguishes familiar from unfamiliar people.

Sight

The child’s development up to the age of 1 year involves a gradual recognition of colours. In this month, he begins to distinguish the yellow from the blue world.

Sleep

At the beginning of his life, the child slept almost 20 hours a day. Now this period has shortened to 14 hours. Of course, not all children are the same, and you may observe a deviation from this norm.

Some children at this age switch to two naps during the day lasting from an hour and a half to 2 hours.

Feeding

It is normal to look forward to the moment when you can introduce a new food into the child’s menu. It’s all about feeding.

If the child is breastfed, keep in mind that modern pediatricians will not recommend early feeding. They will tell you to postpone this moment for a few months.

If you are feeding your child artificial milk, you will usually start introducing new food as soon as he or she is 5½ months old. Be sure to check with the doctor.

Physical activity of a baby at 6 months

A 6-month-old child not only tries to reach toys that are curious to him, but also grasps them. He learns to transfer them from hand to hand. In addition, in this month something very important happens – the body is preparing to sit and crawl. Many children already know how to lift their belly from the surface on which they lie. So they stand on all fours. You can stimulate physical development with the help of an interesting toy. The goal is to get the child to reach it by moving across the floor.

To ease the process, put the child near a wall. This way, he or she will be able to push off the wall with his or her feet and reach the toy. The six-month-old also confidently rolls from tummy to back and vice versa. It may seem to you that the child is ready to sit up. So it’s a good idea to assist the process. However, it must be smooth, as otherwise you risk curving the spine.

Teeth

In most children at this age, the first teeth begin to appear. The process does not happen in a day. This means that over the course of a few days the child may become more cranky and fussy.

Child care

Continue to walk the child daily. Sleeping in the fresh air is very helpful. In addition, the child will look at the surrounding world with interest. He will be interested in passing cars, other children in prams, trees, buildings, etc.

It is recommended to keep the child in a vertical position so that he can observe the environment.

Developmental games

Actively communicate with the child. Show him pictures of his relatives and name them. This game will arouse his interest and excitement. Name the child too. This positively influences his emotional development.

At the end of this month

The six-month-old child is quite active, shows his character and gets excited at every new encounter with the surrounding world. Here’s what he can do at the end of his 6th month:

– Sit on his own for a while.

– To crawl, dragging himself – so he can reach a lying toy at a distance of 10-20 cm.

– To stand on 4 legs and rock back and forth. This is an important indicator and demonstrates that the child is ready for full crawling.

– Leans and turns in different directions.

– Drinks from a cup when you hold it.

– Plays with her food.

– Explores and breaks objects around her with interest.

– Picks up fallen objects, transfers a toy from one hand to the other or from one box to another.

– During the sixth month, simple cause and effect relationships are formed – if he drops the object, it will fall; if he presses a button, music will come on.

– The child is becoming more emotional – you may notice how his mood changes. He may scream when he is unhappy, laugh loudly when you play with him.

– He is happy to play the game “coo-coo”.

– He claps his hands.

– Listens attentively to adult conversations and tries to reproduce some of the sounds and syllables. Consonants such as “h”, “s”, “c” and “u” will appear in his speech.
